The Re-Work appliance connects to your network and delivers secure remote access to your files, data and applications from anywhere in the world, without the need for a VPN.

Re-Work - The Next Step in "Work from Anywhere"

If your business hasn't completed its digital transformation to the cloud, remote workers are probably struggling to access all the facilities they had at their desks. In addition, legacy business applications are not always a good candidate to be moved to the cloud, but until they can be migrated your business is at a distinct disadvantage.

Existing solutions to enable access are either complex to set up, manage, expensive or all three. For businesses that have team members needing to access their desktop PC, remote access solutions are expensive or insecure. Companies that want to deploy Remote Desktop solutions either need expensive software licensing or complex VPN's to stay secure.

This is where the Re-Work Appliance comes in. Available in three different models, Re-Work connects your team to the resources and on-premise applications they need to do their job, as though they were sitting in the office. All from a single, secure, web-based portal.

Re-Work is accessible from Laptops, PC's, Mac's, Chromebooks and iOS/Android devices - imagine being able to run your office-based business applications on an iPad, or access your work PC desktop from your Mac. All with lower costs and better manageability than traditional remote access solutions.

How does Re-Work work?

Re-Work installs easily into your existing office network in two ways:

Drop-In Mode

The easiest method of deployment, Drop-In mode simply requires a single network cable between the Re-Work appliance and your network.

Once this is done and the appliance configured, you only need to port-forward a single https port from your existing router/firewall to the Re-Work appliance. If you are unsure on how to do this, we can assist you by configuring your Re-Work appliance remotely.

Once all the setup is complete, remote users connect to Re-Works web page and sign in. They will then be given access to any of the services you've made available to them from a single pane of glass:

  • Their own PC
  • A dedicated "Pool" of PC's
  • Remote Desktop (terminal) Server(s)
  • Files on a fileshare
  • Virtual Desktops
  • Intranet Applications, including hybrid or Cloud-Published Apps.

All of these are served across the secure connection to the web page on the remote users PC* - there is no need to open up additional, high-risk ports on your firewall, configure VPNs, or manage different access methods for each resource your staff need.

The only requirements for Drop-In mode are that your offices broadband connection has a static IP address (usually standard on Business Broadband services), or that your router supports a dynamic DNS service.

Router Mode

In Router mode, the Re-Work appliance also acts as a UTM firewall, protecting your network.

Providing we have your broadband details, we can pre-configure the Re-Work appliance for you prior to delivery, so that it's truly plug-in and go.

Powered by Watchguard Fireware, The firewall can protect your entire network, offering everything from virus and malware scanning, web filtering, intrusion prevention and web access control.

Additionally, the Re-Work appliance acts as a WiFi Gateway Controller in this mode, so with the addition of optional WiFi access points your business can have world-beating WiFi that's incredibly secure.

Router mode is designed for businesses who wish to replace a low-cost or free "non-business" router that may have been provided by their ISP with a secure, maintained business class UTM firewall. If your business already has an enterprise firewall, please choose the drop-in version.

*Note that PC's must be running the "Pro" version of Windows and not the home version, a basic requirement of office networked PC's. Home versions of Windows will work for client (the remote end) of the Re-Work connection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Isn't opening up my network to anyone with a web-browser insecure?

We are absolutely passionate about security, and cybersecurity in particular. Re-Work remote sessions are of course protected with usernames and passwords (and typically, with the username and password of the users "Windows Account" within your organisation).

Of course, passwords alone are insufficient these days so logins can also be protected with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)*, right from the start.  We support many of the worlds leading 2FA solutions and if you are not sure which one to use, we'll help you get it set up.

*2FA typically involves a mobile phone app that generates a 6-digit, random code, but other versions include facilities for "Push" notifications or use a hardware key, or other biometric identity system.

How does Re-Work support Remote Printing?

Re-Work supports remote printing with virtually no set up required. If the printer is installed on the client PC or laptop (i.e. the device the user is remotely accessing the office with), their home printer will appear to be locally installed on the office PC or RDS server they are accessing.

There is no need to install printer drivers for every conceivable combination of printer that users may have at home.

What about scanning, digital cameras, USB devices and flash drives?

Like printing, many of these devices will be connected between the client and the office PC/Server by the Re-Work when a connection is established. Of course, administrators may wish and can limit connection types (for example, to prevent users from downloading files to their local PC's) if desired.

With scanning, the scanner (including most All-In-One printers) simply needs to have a driver that is either TWAIN or WIA compliant. Nearly all do, but it should be noted the Fujitsu Snapscan range do not. Other Fujitsu scanners (such as the SP series) work perfectly.

One of the advantages of scanner pass-through, with Re-Work, is that the scanner does not save scanned files locally* - the scans are transmitted securely across the connection and only stored when they reach the office PC or Remote Desktop Server. This ensures that confidential documents do not end up being stored or retained on the client device, which could well be a family or home PC.

* Scanning should be initiated from the software on the office PC or Remote Desktop server, and not using the "SCAN TO" button on the scanner. This is likely to invoke the locally installed scanning application, resulting in not only the file being locally stored, but also not reaching it's destination. We recommend; where possible, to disable the "SCAN TO" function if possible, but otherwise user guidance is the best option.

Which PC Windows versions are supported?

At present, Re-Work supports Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 in both 32 or 64 bit versions, providing they are the business ("Pro") version of Windows - i.e. not the Home edition (This only applies to the PC you are connecting to, not the PC being used remotely). It should be noted however that Windows 7 & 8 (not 8.1) are currently "End-Of-Life" and as such, support for these operating systems is "best efforts" and we could withdraw support at any time, as Microsoft are not supporting these OS's either. If you are still running these operating systems, installation is possible but we highly recommend, due to the security threat of doing so, that you replace them as soon as possible.

Should you find that you have a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 machine running "Home" and not "Pro", it can be upgraded without affecting installed programs and data, following purchase of a legitimate product key from Microsoft or trusted vendor.

Does Re-Work support remote connection to Apple Mac's?

When a Mac is running Mac OS/X, it can only act as a Re-Work client and you cannot remotely connect TO a Mac using Re-Work. It is possible to connect to a "Parallels Desktop for Mac" or "VMWare Fusion"  session running on a Mac, or if the Mac is booted into Windows using Bootcamp.  This is because our remote desktop technology utilises Microsoft's RDP technology, which runs in both client and server mode on Windows machines, but in client-only mode on Mac's.

Does Re-Work support more than one Remote Desktop Server?

Re-Work supports multiple RDS servers out-of-the box, and will even handle things like availability and load balancing. You do not need to deploy other Microsoft technologies such as session gateway to achieve this. This is particularly useful at the moment as some businesses that had limited capacity on their RDS server for key workers are now finding that with the surge in home working, they need more resources. In this case, an additional RDS server can be deployed easily and joined to the pool that Re-Work manages.

In fact, Re-Work allows simultaneous publication of RDS servers, PC's, Virtual desktops and many other resources at the same time.

I'm confused about Re-Work 6 supporting up to 40 users, but only 2-10 Remote Desktop Sessions.

All Re-Work appliances will support a given number of Remote Desktop sessions. The higher number shown is where users are connecting to either PC desktops and/or YOUR OWN Remote Desktop Servers (sometimes called "Terminal servers" or "Citrix servers").

The Re-Work 6 appliance is ALSO capable of hosting Remote Desktop Server internally as well, with between 2 and 10 people using it for hosted-desktop rather than simply connecting to PC's or your own RDS's. These numbers are lower than the total maximum connections (40) because of the computing power found inside the unit. If you require more internally hosted users, please enquire about Re-Work 6 expansion upgrades.

Note that the maximum number of internal hosted RDS sessions (10) is based on light usage, e.g. one or two documents, a browser windows or two etc., per simultaneous user. RW6 supports more intensive workloads, but running heavy workloads may well reduce the maximum number.

Can I change from drop-in mode to router/firewall mode later?

If you order your appliance in drop-in mode, we can upgrade it remotely to operate in router/firewall mode (Re-Work 4 & 6 only), providing it still has internet access. The additional security subscription will then be added to your account.

You can also switch an appliance from router/firewall mode to drop-in mode easily, simply by altering the cable configuration. If this change is permanent for any reason, you should contact us to have your firewall security subscription cancelled (30 days notice required).

Can the Re-Work 2 operate in Router/Firewall mode?

In short, no. That's because the appliance does not have enough capacity to run both the Re-Work gateway and the firewall at the same time. Because it's not upgradeable, consider purchasing the Re-Work 4 in drop-in mode if you think you may have a future requirement for Router/Firewall. Should you find yourself needing a firewall/router and have a Re-Work 2, contact us to discuss your options.

I have a different question / I can't find the answer

If you are unsure about the appliances, requirements, subscriptions, or have any other questions, please feel free to email [email protected] with your questions. We'll happily answer any questions. Alternatively, why not call us for free on 0808 196 8130 and we'll be help you out.

What is the minimum subscription term?

All our subscriptions are monthly rolling, and we only need 30 days (from end of month) notice to cancel. We don't lock you into a contract because we know you'll be amazed by Re-Work.

The appliance is yours to keep for ever, having purchased it outright, but note that you must maintain the minimum Core/Base subscription option (per appliance, not per user) for the device to function.

User numbers can be flexed up and down, especially important in the current business climate, but please note that we don't pro-rate, so if your user numbers drop in any monthly period, it won't be until the next month the count changes. Additionally, if users join your organisation part-way through a month, we may charge you for the full month for that user.

If you exceed the number of users compared to the subscription purchased, we reserve the right to invoice in arrears for the over-usage, but there is no penalty for doing so.
